Title:Buloba - The Bulaba Shrine
0113-Buloba - The Bulaba Shrine
The system of nominal classification in Gujjolay Eegima
Contributor:Elias Tendeng
Serge Sagna
Coverage:Senegal
Date:Unknown
Description:Elias and his wife talk about the Bulaba personal shrine for which he is the only remaining priest. In the photo, Elias Tendeng, the only remaining priest of the Buloba (and also Gannew) shrine, is holding his own 'Buloba' shrine. This is a personal shrine which can be made to talk when consulted. The 'Buloba' shrine is a speaking shrine which is generally owned by an individual. The 'speaking' part is made of a small drum-like object to which threads are attached. The shrine's functions include protecting the owner, helping them to achieve better things in life and revealing the reasons for any misfortune they undergo. When it is neglected by the owner, this shrine can also affect their health, harvest or any other aspect of their life.
