Documenting oral genres in the Bolga dialect of Gurene (Northern Ghana)
Coverage:Ghana
Date:2010-05-10
Description:A chief married ten wives but none of them gave birth so his mother asked him to go and consult the soothsayer to find out the cause of the problem. The soothsayer advised that he go home and have sex with his mother and then the women will become pregnant. When he returned home he was so sad and his mother asked what the advise was and he told her. The mother said 'no one will see it' so they went to have sex and from there all the women became pregnant. But a mouse witnessed it and when the cat wanted to catch the mouse it asked the cat to stop and it would tell the cat the secret. The cat sung a song about it and the whole village got to know about it and the chief was embarrassed. The moral lesson is that there can be no secret without someone knowing.
