Title:Lizard and Ant Visit Each Other's Gardens
0305-Lizard and Ant Visit Each Other's Gardens
Contributor:Leo Vanatsi
Coverage:Papua New Guinea
Description:Lizard was walking around in the bush, and he met Ant. He thought that Ant was very skinny. He reasoned that Ant must not be a hard-working man, because if he were, he would have plenty of food and be big and strong. He invited Ant to come and visit his food gardens the following day. All of Lizard's gardens were overgrown with bush and vines. Ant invited Lizard to pay a return visit to his own food gardens. Ant's gardens were well tended and full of food. Ant encouraged Lizard to eat as much as he wanted. Lizard ate and ate and praised Ant as being a very hard-working man after all. Eventually Lizard had eaten so much that he could no longer walk, and the rope that he had used to tie his laplap was hidden under his swollen belly. Ant went to get the birds to help Lizard. They tried to remove the rope to reduce the pressure on Lizard's belly. Eventually Hornbill approached to cut the rope with his beak. Owl looked over Hornbill's shoulder. When Hornbill cut the rope, Lizard's belly exploded and his faeces went all over Owl's face. Owl wiped his eyes with his wing, and that is why he has such big eyes today.
