Title:Chicken and Megapod Go Hunting
0305-Chicken and Megapod Go Hunting
Contributor:Leo Vanatsi
Coverage:Papua New Guinea
Description:Chicken and Megapod lived in a settlement. They never went hunting and ate the game that other men killed. They became ashamed and one day they agreed to go hunting. They took their gear and went into the bush. They built a leaf house, lit a fire and then went to look for game. A big storm came. It destroyed the leaf house and extinguished the fire. Chicken and Megapod abandoned their hunting, and went back to where they had built the leaf house. They were too ashamed to return openly to the settlement. They decided to steal fire from a house and then return to the bush to continue hunting. Chicken went to steal the fire, while Megapod waited in the bush. Chicken warmed and dried himself at the fire, and decided not to go back to Megapod. Today, you can hear Megapod calling out to Chicken, asking "Where are you?". Chicken replies "I'm not coming back!".
