0305-Description of Traditional Fishing Methods
Contributor:Leo Vanatsi
Coverage:Papua New Guinea
Date:Unknown
Description:Leo describes two different types of traditional fishing, one called "vangana" the other called "otsumbu". Both are practised in rivers and both involve damming. "Vangana" is practised in muddy rivers, is mainly used to catch prawns, and can be done by men, women or children. "Otsumbu" involves diverting the flow of a river into a channel. The men and boys build a high dam using stones supported with logs, while the women and girls plug the holes between the stones with rotten wild banana.
