| Lacandon Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandon(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandon culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc. | ||

| This is a traditional Lacandon folk story, which the participant was asked to write in his own language, from his own memory. This is one of several written examples, that the collectors prompted the participant to write. He was left alone to write this story. The topic was of his own choosing. Our purpose is to compare the structure and language of written texts with their oral counterparts. | ||
| Lacandón is the only language used in this text. However, a Spanish translation was written in later, with the participant's help. | ||
| KGP is the second youngest son of CK and KM. He was born in the community of Naha and has lived there all his life. He is one of a few northern Lacandóns who can read and write Lacandón and Spanish. He began working on the current project with Cook and Carlson in 2000 on the transcription and translation of the collected texts. | ||
