Description:Waima'a is an endangered Austronesian language spoken in the Baucau district of East Timor. Goal of project is as comprehensive a documentation of communicative events and linguistic metaknowledge as possible. For further details on scope and format of documentation see link below.
Exchanging "bride price (belis/barlake)". In this instance, which is probably typical, the exchange process called belis in the local Malay (barlake in Tetum) basically involves three parties: A) Lamberto and his male relatives (brothers, sons, newphews and grand-sons); B) Lamberto's sisters and their husbands; and C) the male relatives of Lamberto's wife (her brothers etc). A asks B to pay open debts incurred in the marriage process and basically passes on everything to C. C is generally not an active part in the recorded negotations but rather sits at the back of the house and listens for what A and B come up with (A and C have settled on what their respective debts are earlier on).____________________ The current negotiations are mostly concerned with a sword which is first rejected by A and then also by C, both claiming that the night before (obviously in informal prenegotiations) one had agreed to make a buffalo part of the deal and the sword is not of the quality which counts as a buffalo equivalent (as original swords from Makasar do, for example).____________ the recording starts some time in the middle of the exchange which has been going on for some time - it's ca. 7 o'clock Sunday morning, the speakers having been up all night (this recording follows /aldin_pesta/ which occurred about an hour earlier, says MB) no continuous recording but stop and go, especially the video recording; WMMBAC30NOV0202.wav stopped at 5:40, ca. 31:00 (more than half minute)
ca. 20 people, including João, Mário, Saturlino________________ the people participating in this have been up all night, drinking and smoking_MB had recorded about 15 min of the belis negotations before NH arrived – after that there are about 80 minutes recorded on both video and audio (cass, dat).______________________video tape coverage begins with (from left to right: father of Graciano, Saturlino, João
rudimentary knowledge of Tetum and Portuguese
cousin of Lamberto (father’s brother’s son)?? only restricted knowledge of Tetum, no Malay
Saturlino's father is Kai-Tomu; he is a cousin (FBS) of João and Salus; always at the side of João and behaves like an apprentice of João
for further details see his own CV (session: Mauricio_CV) no mothers name because parents were baptized very late, he himself baptized at the age of 17? da Conceição = Saint, Aparício = Godfather (< Luís Aparício Guterres, primary school teachter at the time, new diretór distrito since November 2004 ) was nearly 27 years old when project started One grandparent of Maurício (mother of mother) from Bucoli Knows Malay and Tetum, says that he knows only little Makasae but seems to be able to follow most of everyday interactions; Tetum probably primary language these days, as indicated in language choice father (Raku-Bie) dead mother (Joana Belo/Kasa-Watu) old and nearly deaf, living on hill Kailale Oli which belongs to Parlamento but is very close to the border of Kaisidu; mother does not know any other lg in addition to Waima'a
Combines recordings on WMNHAD01DEC0201 (first) and WMMBAC30NOV0202 (second, despite the earlier date!) stop and go recording transcribed in 4 different files second transcript starts at 1.845.682ms third starts after 2.892.639ms ends on 3.690.678 4th starts around 4.759.980 (= 1:19:21:00)
stop and go recording NB: includes about 30minutes from WMNHVDP14Nov0201.mpg plus 37minutes from WMNHAD01Dec0201.wav
This tape is not correctly labelled - it should have been labelled: WMNHAD30NOV0201.wav - has been used alternating with WMMBAC30NOV0201 in the same time frame (evening of 30.11 and morning of 1.12).____________ this should be copied first into belis_negotia.wav, then the bit from WMMBAC30NOV0202
this part of the negotations follows the part on WMNHAD01Dec0201.wav - tape actually should have been labled 01DEC0201 - since this was first recorded on on the morning of 1 DEC 2002
= first part of belis_negotia.mpg
= second part of belis_negotia.mpg
