Description:NI narrates, Frog, Where Are You, the Mercer Mayers picture book, for the collectors. The purpose is to compare the narratives of bilingual Lacandones.
Lacandón Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandón(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandón culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
NI narrates Frog Where Are You, Mercer-Mayer's picture book, for the collectors. The purpose is to compare the narratives of bilingual Lacandones. A Spanish version is in Frogstory_sp_NI.
Lacandon is the language used in this session. Some Spanish is used to communicate the task or to answer the speaker's questions about the story.
NI is the only participant in this session. The collectors are the only others present, and can be heard explaining or clarifying the task.
The collector of this session data is also responsbile for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
