Coverage:Brazil
Date:2001-05-24
Description:ENGLISH: Myth about the bird named 'kowow' (in Portuguese: Anu), which pretends that his grandmother is dead and starts crying for her. By doing this, he ends up creating the various types of crying used by Xinguan people to express sorrow for the death of a beloved relative.
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
Myth about a bird name 'kowow' (in Portuguese: anu), which in old times was human-like. This myth explains the origins of the "cryings" that Upper Xingu people use to express their sorrow for the death of somebody.
The speaker talks in Trumai.
There were two participants during the recording: the researcher (who is behind the camera) and the native speaker of Trumai (Speaker3).
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
Speaker3 is a native speaker of Trumai. She lives in the Terra Preta village, in the central area of the Xingu Reserve. Both her parents were Trumai. Speaker3 lived in the Kamayurá village for many years, when she was still married. Nowadays she is separated, living with her daughter and son. She is middle-aged.
