Description:ENGLISH: Various women of the Boa Esperança village dance and sing songs of the Yakurikuma festivity. The young girls participate in the dance, in order to learn and practice it. Later the women beat the men who are watching them (this is part of the festivity; it is considered a kind of game). The recording was made by a Trumai young man, with the help of the researcher.
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
Various women of the Boa Esperança village dance and sing songs of the Yakurikuma festivity. They are actually just rehearsing.
The songs of the Yamurikuma festivity are not in the Trumai language (they actually have special lyrics). Sometimes the participants of the dance speak in Portuguese.
There are various participants in this session. They are women who live at the Boa Esperança village.
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
