Description:ENGLISH: Songs of the Javari festivity, performed by a Trumai speaker, who was the main expert on ceremonial chants of the Trumai group. This session is not a real performance, but rather a training. This is a continuation of session RG90S-Java1.
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
A Trumai speaker performs songs of the Javari ceremony. His son decided to make this recording, because he wanted to document the songs of this important tradition of the Trumai people. The researcher helped him to do the recording (in 1990).
The Trumai language is used for explanations and background conversation. With regard to the lyrics of the songs, they are not in Trumai (the songs have a special kind of lyrics).
The songs are perfomed by a Trumai man, who died years ago (Speaker1). He was the main expert on traditional songs and chants of the Trumai group.
Speaker1 was a native speaker of Trumai. He was considered the best storyteller of the Trumai people. He was also an expert in ritual chants, being very respected by other Xinguan groups. He had knowledge about medicinal plants and roots, and shamanism practices. He was old (above 70) when the died in 1995.
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
