Description: | Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan (researcher) between 1984-1986. A conversation between Dorian de Haan and two boys, one is from Suriname and the other from Aruba. Although this is a long conversation, at the end it is broken; probably because the tape was full.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
This is a conversation between Dorian de Haan and two boys. One is from Suriname (Jeffrey) and the other from Aruba (Laurens). Both aren't born in the Netherlands. They talked about which languages they speak and which language has their preference. Their friends, favorite/non-favorite subjects in school, what you thought of the Netherlands before you came here, the birthday of Laurens and the hospitalization of Jeffrey.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Jeffrey is born in Suriname and he has been in the Netherlands since a couple of weeks. He prefers to speak the Suriname language (I assume that he means Sranan, although I'm not 100% sure about this - MvdV), he also speaks Dutch. At school he speaks the Suriname language with other children. He has been in the hospital for a short period, because his skin and limps hurts.
Laurens was born in Aruba and he has been in the Netherlands since one year. Today is his 14th birthday and after school he has a birthday party. He prefers to speak Papiamentu (according to him it is 5 languages in 1) or English. Dutch is more difficult for him. At school he cannot speak Papiamentu with the other children.
