Description:Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan (reseacher) between 1984-1986. Recording was done in June/July, summer holiday is very soon (July 15th). This is a broken conversation. This conversation is continued in DBD DH 029A.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
This is a conversation between Dorian de Haan and 3 girls, Chantal, Nissa and Sandra. They talk about school, which subject do they like/which don't they like, what they do when they come home after school, and the school garden.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Chantal is in the last form of primary school and she is of Dutch origin. She has two fathers. She is raised as a catholic. She would like to be a stewardess of teacher when she grows up. Her father applies air channels. Her talk in class was about rabbits. Same girl as in 7E, 7F, 7G & 29A.
Nissa is of Sarnami Hindustani origin and was born in Suriname. She is in the Netherlands for 3 years. Currently she is in the 5th form of primary school. She has 8 siblings. Her father is still in Suriname and her mother already lived in the Netherlands when Nissa came there. Her mother wants her children to speak Dutch. With her grandmother Nissa speak Sarnami, and with her mother Dutch. She thinks her command of Dutch is better than that of English. Her favorite subject at school is Biology, but she doesn’t like geography. With two other girls she gave a talk about rats in class. Same girl as in 18F, 20L, 22A, 22B & 29A.
Sandra is of Sarnami Hindustani origin and was born in Suriname. She was 3 when she came to the Netherlands in 1975. At home they sometimes speak Sarnami. Sandra doesn't like to speak Sarnami, because she is afraid to make mistakes. With her grandmother (who lives with her family) she always speaks Sarnami. Her mother works at school (unclear whether she is a teacher). Her sister Moniek goes to secondary school. Since a couple of weeks she takes a Hindi language class. Her favorite subject at school is Biology, but she doesn’t like geography. According to her the subject language is easy. Same girl as in 18J, 18K, 18L, 29A, 30C & 34B.
