Description: | Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan between 1984-1986. This is a broken conversation.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
Dorian de Haan talks with 3 boys, Arshad (Pakistani), Vincent (Sarnami Hindustani) and Hans-Willem (Dutch) about school (what they find difficult/not difficult), the languages they speak, and she asks them if they could tell her a story about something exiting that happened in their lives.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Arshad is of Pakistani origin. It is unclear where he was born. At home he speaks a Pakistani language with his family (to me it is unclear which language he means, because he refers to the langue in Dutch as 'Pakistaans'). He is the youngest of 8 children. He and his family are Islamic. He finds it important to speak his mother tongue. He takes Urdu language lessons.
Vincent is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. It is unclear where he was born. With his mother he usually speaks Sarnami. He has two younger brothers who both were born in the Netherlands. They don't speak Sarnami very well, but they do understand. Vincent finds language skills at school difficult. He thinks that it is important to speak your mother tongue.
Hans-Willem is of Dutch origin. He is in the last form of primary school. He was born in Heerlen (Limburg). His mother is from Zutphen and his father from Amsterdam. He has a dog, which he got in 1980; the dog is 4 years during the interview. His previous dog died when Hans-Willem was 8, so now he is about 12. Same boy as in 27D, 46F & 46G.
