Description:Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan between 1984-1986.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
Dorian de Haan talks with 2 girls, Farna and Soraya, about school (which subjects they find difficult/ not difficult, like/do not like), the languages they speak, religious celebrations, Urdu languages courses, Suriname and their arrival in the Netherlands.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Farna is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. She is born in Suriname and lived in Paramaribo. 9 Years ago she moved to the Netherlands, she went to Kindergarten in the Netherlands. Currently she is in the last form of primary school. Next year she will go to the MAVO. At home she speaks Dutch, with her father she speaks Sarnami and with her siblings she speaks Sranan and Dutch. She is the 3rd of 4 children. When her parents fight they speak Sranan. With her friends she mostly speaks Dutch. She prefers to speak Dutch. According to herself of the three languages she speaks, her command of Dutch is the best, then Sarnami and then Sranan. She takes a Urdu language class. She lives in The Hague. Same girl as in 4C, 4D, 7B, 20H, 35B & 42A.
Soraya is of Suriname Creole origin. She was born in Suriname and at the age of 4 she came to the Netherlands. With her father she speaks Sranan, and with her mother both Sranan and Dutch. They prefer Dutch, however. With her siblings she speaks both languages. Her father is Islamic and her mother is of Suriname Creole origin. She is not on Dorian's list of informants.
