Description:Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
Dorian de Haan talks with 3 boys, Basri, Yurtsever (both Turkish) and José (Portuguese) about (roller) skating, Turkey and Portugal, the languages they speak and Turkish/Portuguese class.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Basri is of Turkish origin and was born in turkey. He moved to the Netherlands when he was 6, and he has been living in the Netherlands for 7 years now. So he is about 13. With his parents he always speaks Turkish, with his younger brother he speaks both Dutch and Turkish. He finds that in certain situations Dutch is easier (school) and in other Turkish (at home, in Turkey). However, in general Dutch is easier than Turkish. Same boy as in 28D & 40D.
Yurtsever is of Turkish origin and was born in Turkey. He arrived in the Netherlands when he was 2 and lived here for a year, after which they returned to Turkey. When he was 5 the family moved to the Netherlands again. He has 2 siblings who both were born in the Netherlands. He says that Turkey is his mother country. He finds Dutch easier, but he says that when he is in Turkey Turkish is easier. He is in the next to last form of primary school.
José is of Portuguese origin and was born in the Netherlands. When he was 1 year old he lived together with his mother in Portugal for a year. With his parents he speaks Portuguese and with his younger siblings he speaks both Portuguese and Dutch. He finds Dutch easier, but Portuguese nicer to speak. Every year they go for a holiday to Portugal.
