Description:Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan (researcher) between 1984-1986.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
Dorian de Haan talks with Ray, a Suriname Creole boy, about arguments at home with his brother and at school with boys in his class. They also talk about punishment.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Ray is of Suriname Creole origin, and was born in Suriname. He is 12 years old. Since 2 years he has been in the Netherlands. His mother already lived in the Netherlands; therefore Ray lived with his grandmother in Suriname for a while. Together with his grandmother and brothers he went to the Netherlands. When he came to the Netherlands he went to the 4th form of primary school, currently he is in the last form. He is the youngest of 4 children, all are boys. At home he speaks mostly Dutch. His mother speaks Sranan to him. He finds it important to speak Sranan, however when he speaks Sranan Dutch words slip into the language. With his friends he sometimes speaks Sranan. Same boy as in 41C, 43C, 44L & 44M.
