Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
Dorian de Haan talks with 2 girl, Radha and Usha, about Suriname, their travel to the Netherlands, how long they have been in the Netherlands, the languages they speak, their religion, religious celebrations, and going on a holiday.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Radha is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. She was born in Suriname and in 1973 she moved to the Netherlands with her parents. She was 1 year old. Today it is exactly 11 years ago that she and her family came to the Netherlands. Her mother wants that she speaks Dutch, however most of the time her mother speaks Sarnami with her. With her little brother her mother speaks Dutch. He has been longer in Suriname where he lived with his grandmother. After she passed away he moved to the Netherlands. Therefore he has to learn to speak Dutch. Radha speaks with him Sarnami. Her father also speaks Hindi (her ancestors are form India she mentions proudly). Radha find Dutch and Sarnami easy to speak. She prefers to pray in Sarnami. Same girl as in 7C, 22F, 22G, 22H & 55C.
Usha is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. She was born in Suriname and moved to the Netherlands in 1973. She had been here for 10 years now. Her parents want her to speak Sarnami. With her little sister she speaks mostly Dutch. She finds Sarnami easier to speak then Dutch. She takes Hindi language class. She prays in Hindi. She is not on Dorian's list of informants. Same girl as in 55C.
