| Description: | Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan between 1984-1986. This is a continuation of DBD DH 054D. | |
| Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch. | ||
| Dorian de Haan talks with 2 girls, Janice and Yvonne, about Hindu weddings ceremonies, Suriname and traveling. | ||
| Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department. | ||
| Janice is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. She is born in the Netherlands, but she lived for a year with her grandmother in Suriname, because her mother was pregnant. She was 4-6 years old then. With her mother she speaks Sranan and Dutch. Her mother doesn’t like to talk Dutch. Her mother and her aunt speak Sranan with each other. Janice finds Dutch easier then Sarnami or Sranan. She is not on Dorian's list of informants. Same girl as in 54D. | ||
| Yvonne is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. At home with her parents she speaks Sarnami, with her sisters she speaks both Sarnami and Dutch. She finds it easier to speak Sarnami. Twice a week she takes a Hindi language class. Her brother was born in Suriname and arrived here by both. In 1978 Yvonne went to Suriname for a holiday with her family. She is in the last form of primary school. Same girl as in 7D, 22C, 22D, 22E, 51D & 54D. | ||
