De taalsituatie van Surinaamse kinderen op de basisschool in Nederland
Contributor (speaker):Viajai
Description:Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan between 1984-1986.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
The task is to retell a story about a boy and his football. Together the boy and his ball go to a football competition in the park. Unfortunately the boy and his team do not win. After the match he stops to order a fries. He puts his ball in the truck of a car. The car rides off. Fortunately, it stops for a pedestrian crossing where the boy takes his ball back and goes home.
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Viajai is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. He was born in Suriname and moved to the Netherlands when he was 4, which was in 1975 (before the independence of Suriname). In 1980 he went with his family back for a short vacation. His parents are divorced (3 years ago). He is the oldest and has a younger sister (5). His mother is unemployed, as well as his father. A couple of years ago his father had an accident at his work side. The tops of his fingers were cut off. At home he speaks mostly Dutch, although sometimes he speaks Surinamese with his mother. His sister doesn't want to speak it, but she understands it. He prefers to speak Dutch. With his friends and cousins he speaks Dutch. According to him Surinamese isn't difficult. He is in the last form of primary school and wants to go to horticultural school next year. His best friend is Henk (Sarnami Hindustani). Same boy in 6A, 6B, 6C, 8E, 9C, 18Q, 30B & 32B.
