Contributor (interviewer):Dorian
Contributor (speaker):Gheeta
Description:Recording took place during primary school hours (08:30 AM-03:30 PM) at a primary school in a separate classroom. Recording was done by Dorian de Haan between 1984-1986. This is a broken conversation.
Goal of this project is to get a clear view of the command of Sarnami and/or Sranan of primary school children of Suriname origin and to study their command of Dutch.
For this task the child needs to read a short article and has to answer questions about it. Dorian de Haan talks about the short article with the child. The topics are: - agriculture - how people used to live - The Golden Age - industrializing, migration to urban centers - growth of The Hague
Dorian de Haan is the coordinator/collector of this project. She is of Dutch origin. She works at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, at the Developmental Psychology department.
Gheeta is of Sarnami Hindustani origin. She is born in Suriname and at the age of 3 she moved to the Netherlands. Currently she is in the last form. At home she is the oldest; she has one younger sister, who is 4. With her parents she speaks Sarnami and Sranan. They hardly speak Dutch at home. However, she finds it easier to speak Dutch. She also speaks a little bit Hindi. She sees herself as Surinamese and she wouldn't want to be Dutch. She's very talkative. She loves Hindu movies. Sandra (Sarnami Hindustani) is her best friend. Same girl as in 3A, 10L, 10M, 10N, 14A, 18R, 19C, 28A, 30C & 34B.
