| The interview took place on two subsequent days in a cultural center. The first 20 min of the interview another authoritative person was present, which influenced the interview. After that interviewer was alone with interviewee. The interview was semi-structured, meaning that a questionary was used, but only when necessary. The interviewee was encouraged to tell his own story without much interruption. | ||
| AM spent most of his life in a small village near the Iranian border where he was born. He is from the Mili tribe. Most people in the village used to live from animal farming during his childhood. The village had 20 houses/250 people when he was young, and 300 houses/2500 people nowadays. In the past people went to the zozans (summer pastures) in summer to graze their animals. In the 1990s these summer pastures became a no-go zone that could only be entered by the military. As the village was dependent on animal farming for their livelihood, this destroyed their source of income. Today most men of the village do seasonal labor in other parts of Turkey, mostly in construction. Because of the presence of a military station next to the village, electricity and television came relatively early to the village, in the 1970s. AM grew up with the Dengbej culture. In his village the playing of musical instruments was regarded as shameful. When he was a teenager he bought a cassetteplayer, and a cassette of a Kurdish Alevi Asik singer. He felt moved by this music and wanted to learn to play and sing in that style by himself. He left to Western Turkey where he visited some Alevi Asik singers, and learned to play the saz. After some time his father came and brought him back to the village. He forbade AM to play the saz, and destroyed his instruments. It took until the beginning 2000nds before AM started to perform again. | ||
