Description:		The Sranan fragment covers three pages, including two dialogues and some words and phrases. Schuchardt (1914), Rens (1953), Voorhoeve & Lichtveld (1975) and Arends (1995: 16-17) all focus on the presence of a number of English-derived words and phrases, that have become obsolete later. Regarding the complex spelling of these words and phrases, Arends remarks that "Herlein's spelling seems consistently closer to English pronunciation that Nepveu's; especially striking is Herlein's way of rendering English diphthongs, as in 'draei', 'geau', and 'bie laeu'" (Arends 1995: 17). Furthermore, Herlein gives detailed information on Suriname plantations and Suriname plantation in the book, based on written sources and personal communication and observation. The plantation manager Adriaan van Zwol may have been a significant source of information. What is more, he may have acted as one of Herlein's consultants on the language. We know very little of this person, but if he worked on one of the old plantations on the Commewina River, it would explain the presence of English features in the text. It is more likely that English influence would be preserved on a plantation than in the city, as the former is characterized by stronger communal ties than the latter (Milroy and Milroy 1985).
		From 2005 to present, several scholars at the University of Amsterdam, Leiden and Nijmegen have been collaborating to build a digital archive for the related Surinamese creoles Sranan and Saramaccan, that rivals the Negerhollands database. Upon completion, the Suriname Creole Archive (SUCA) will include some 550,000 Early Sranan and Early Saramaccan tokens.

		The identity of the author of the earliest printed Sranan fragment from the book titled 'Beschrijvinge van de volk-plantinge Zuriname' (1718) remains somewhat of a mystery (Arends 1995, 2003, in prep.). In the book he is mentioned only by his initials, J.D. Hl. The full name of the Author, Herlein, is cited in the 'ode to the author' included in some copies of the first edition of this book (Arends 1995, Lichteveld 1966), but not in the second edition that is used here. A certain Jean Herlin, which could be a spelling variant of J. Herlein, acquired civil rights of the town of Leeuwarden in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands in 1709. However, as J. D. Herlein was in Suriname at that time, the names Jean Herlin and J. D. Herlein may not refer to the same person (Arends 1995: 12). Two year prior to the publication of this work, a similar book appeared in print by the same publisher Meindert Injema in Leeuwarden, in which presumably the same author describes his journey to Suriname with a ship called 's Lands Welvaren (captain: Anderies Martens). It left Texel on October 16, 1706 and arrived in Suriname thirteen weeks and several days later (Lichtveld 1966). Assuming the author is indeed Herlein, he must have landed in Suriname in the second week of January 1707. At that time, the governor of Suriname was Van der Veen, whom Herlein mentions in the acknowledgements. Cornelis Pietersen Ederssen and Adriaan van Zwol are also acknowledged. The former was a merchant of Paramaribo, who hosted Herlein; the latter a plantation manager. It is not clear when Herlein left exactly, although there is some biographical evidence that the year may have been 1715 (Arends 1995: 12).
