| Description: | Court records from the judicial archives stored in the Nationaal Archief in The Hague contain more or less verbatim reports of what was being said during an interrogation, so that the testimonies of slaves and freemen of West-African descent are occasionally reproduced in Sranan. An indication of the authenticity of these records may be found in the repeated use of a swear word such as 'you mama pima' meaning 'your mama's cunt' (Van den Berg & Arends 2004). Apart from a number of interesting metalinguistic observations, these documents contain some purely linguistic data as well, in the form of some 500 isolated Sranan words (tokens) and 54 short Sranan passages. Due to the particular type of record we are dealing with here, often containing more than one account of the same event, some of these passages occur more than once, although not always exactly in the same wording. Although sentence boundaries are sometimes difficult to determine in this type of material, a provisional analysis yielded a total of around 70 sentences. However, since some of these sentences occur more than once, whether in exactly identical phrasing or not, the actual number of different 'sentence types' may be estimated at some 55. The average sentence length is 5 words, which is comparable to that in the Herlein fragment, where it is 4,5. The earliest document mentioning a lawsuit concerning an African slave dates from 1684, while the earliest Sranan words and sentences (about ten passages) date from 16-18 July 1707. The remaining passages are from records dating from the 1745-1767 period (Van den Berg 2000, Van den Berg & Arends 2004). | |
| From 2005 to present, several scholars at the University of Amsterdam, Leiden and Nijmegen have been collaborating to build a digital archive for the related Surinamese creoles Sranan and Saramaccan, that rivals the Negerhollands database. Upon completion, the Suriname Creole Archive (SUCA) will include some 550,000 Early Sranan and Early Saramaccan tokens. | ||
