Description:ENGLISH: Interview with a man who is an expert on traditional prayers. He is not Trumai, but acquired his knowledge about prayers from an old Trumai man, who is already dead. To record the prayers themselves is taboo. Thus, instead of doing that, we recorded an interview in which the man talks about the various types of prayers. The interview was conducted in Portuguese, since the speaker is not Trumai (although sometimes he uses Trumai words; he learned this language through his wife, who is Trumai). The interview was made as a way of registering information about a tradition that is under the risk of disappearing (few people in the Upper Xingu area still know traditional prayers). For a general explanation about prayers, made in the Trumai language, see session RG02Reza.
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
The researcher conducts an interview with a man who is an expert on traditional prayers. The interview was conducted in Portuguese, since the speaker is not Trumai (the interview was made not to register the language, but to register the information about prayers, which is a kind of knowledge that is under the risk of disappearing).
The speakers talk in Portuguese.
There were two participants: the interviewer (Raquel) and the interviewee (xinguan consultant).
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
The consultant is ethnically Waurá. He is married to a Trumai woman and can speak Trumai, having learned it when he was an young adult. He has been living among the Trumai for many years (almost 30 years), and was taught by a Trumai old man how to perform traditional xinguan prayers.
