Description: | This story was recorded in 2004.
The overall goal of the project is the documentation and preservation of the Hoocąk language. The project therefore includes the following sub-projects: (1) (audio- and video-)recording, analysing, processing and archiving a representative corpus of Hoocąk texts, (2) linguistic analysis and representation of texts that have previously been recorded by other linguists or anthropologists, (3) development of a comprehensive and linguistically consistent lexicon, (4) training of Hoocąk language instructors, (5) development of teaching material (6) further analyses (e.g. investigation of dialectal differences among Wisconsin and Nebraska Hoocąks)
This is a story about MS32 and his brothers setting the woods on fire.
The actors knew each other before the recording.
FS19 works closely together with FS18. They are Hoocąk language instructors and teach at the Hoocąk House of Wellness as well as at the Casino in Baraboo. They often assisted us and are considered to be very good speakers of the Hoocąk language.
MS32 speaks Hoocąk fluently and has assisted us several times (for dictionary work and recordings). He is our youngest consultant, and is considered to be a good speaker. MS32 works as Hoocąk language instructor.
FS18 works closely together with FS19. They are Hoocąk language instructors and teach at the Hoocąk House of Wellness as well as at the Casino in Baraboo. They often assist us and are considered to be very good speakers of the Hoocąk language.
HG used to work as a curriculum developer at the Hoocąk Language Division. Since 2005 he is employed as an apprentice who is learning the language in order to become a language instructor. He has contributed some data to the documentation project. HG is a member of the Hoocąk tribe. He is married to FS16.
NJ's first language is German. He is also fluent in English and has very little knowledge of Hoocąk. He left the documentation project in Jan. 2007.
