Description:This recording was made at a wake keeping the night before the funeral of Geoffrey Adjabeng, a clan leader. The men gathered at one of the meeting places in the village and spent the night giving speeches, singing and drinking. This event was recorded by Sammy. No outside observer was present. In this recording, one of the attendants tells how they brought the body from the mortuary in Ho to Vane. He is then welcomed and greeted. Part of this recording has been transcribed and translated by Mathias and Saskia.
The Avatime project aims to describe and document Avatime. The researchers involved in this project are Rebecca Defina and Saskia van Putten. The project included fieldwork in Ghana in 2008 and was completed in 2009. Outcomes of the project are: (1) audio and video recordings of different genres, of which 13,5 hours have been transcribed and annotated, (2) an Avatime-English wordlist, (3) grammar notes and (4) two Master's theses, one on the expression of motion in Avatime (Saskia van Putten) and one on aspect and mood in Avatime (Rebecca Defina).
Woagba Bazudie arrives at the wake keeping and is welcomed by the chairman of the wake keeping, the linguist Tsamie Atsu Ganusah. Woagba Bazudie tells the other people how he and some others traveled from the mortuary in Ho to Vane with the body. Tsamie Ganusah welcomes him and they exchange greetings. Then Tsamie Atsu Ganusah gives a short speech too.
The only language spoken at this recording is Avatime.
The recording was made by Sammy. The main speakers are Woagba Bazudie and Tsamie Atsu Ganusah. Some other people can also be heard speaking every now and then. Many men of the village are present. Part of the recording has been transcribed and translated by Mathias and Saskia.
Woagba Bazudie was one of the people present at the wake-keeping that was recorded. He comes from Vane but lives in Ho.
Atsu Ganusah lives in Vane and is the linguist of Tsadome, the 'downtown' part of Vane. The linguist is the spokesperson of the chief.
Mathias was one of our main consultants for this project. He has helped us transcribe recordings and participated in experiments and elicitation sessions. He was born in Vane and grew up there. His father has died and his mother has moved to Accra, so he lives with his grandparents. He is a student at the Senior Secondary School in Vane.
Saskia van Putten is one of the researchers in this project. She did her bachelor in Languages and Cultures of Africa and her research master in Linguistics, both at Leiden University. She started PhD studies at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in 2009. Saskia grew up and still lives in the Netherlands.
Sammy was one of our main informants for this project. He was born in Vane and has lived there most of his life. He has also spent some time in Accra. He speaks good English and Ewe.
The recording was made using a Marantz PMD flash recorder. The recording is mono, 16 bit and 48 kHz.
This toolbox file was created from the ELAN file in which the recording was annotated.
This is the annotation of the part of the recording in which Woagba Bazudie talks to the people present about his trip to Ho to bring the body to Vane. Transcribed by Mathias and Saskia.
