Title:		Fishing technique by poisening the river

Description:		The Cholanaikka traditional fishing technique is a fairly elaborated process. It involves several steps. 1. Preparation of the fishing area. a. They select a delimited area of the river and prepare it by cleaning the borders, removing stones (V27) and adding earth to fill the holes (V32). Additionally, they fix a net on some rocky border of the fishing space 2. Preparation of the poisoning material. b. They collect from the forest some poisonous creepers ‘nanju valli’, ‘kokkala kocci’, ‘kundu valli’ as well as the bark of a poisonous tree called ‘enga’. The poisoning material will alter the fish neurological system and make it easier to catch. 2. Preparation of the poisoning material. c. They bring the creepers branches (V34) as well as bigger pieces of wood (V35) and then d. beat and flatten the creeper branches with the wood pieces (V37) -- or with a stone (V42)-- in order to exude its poisoning suck. e. They put the poisonous crushed creepers at the in-flows of the river (V40) to the delimited fishing area. f. They also prepare another poisoning material, less powerful, out of leaves of a tree ‘kaai maram”. They bring some leafy branches of that tree and crush its leaves into a paste (V67E1) that is thrown into the river and dispersed (V65, V68E1). This processing of the leaves goes on during the fishing session. After this poisoning of the water, small fishes will float (P413) and bigger fishes will become a little ‘sleepy’, hiding under the rocks. 3. Fishing can start. Waiting, watching, catching.... The children participate (P397, 408, 415) in dislodging the hiding fishes and catching them. Fishes are caught in the net (V67E2, V68E2) or by hands (V75, 76). Different types of fish are caught (P388, P394, P396, P399, 400, P402), all together, a successful fishing session (P403).
