Contributor:Speaker1
Coverage:Brazil
Date:1989-08-07
Description:ENGLISH: Myth about a girl who is carried away by a tapir. Eventually she finds a way of tricking the tapir and escaping from it, but later she dies. This myth explains why a human underarm is thinner than the forearm. It was narrated by a Trumai storyteller in 1989. Although the quality of the recording is not good, it was preserved because the content is important. This myth was recorded again in 2000, in a slightly different version and with another narrator.
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
