Description:		In this recording Secundina Aguvail discusses traditional childcare with Catalina Calazacón. The physical safety of the child is paramount and Catalina describes how to make a type of papoose from the sheath of the pambil and how to construct a ‘sokoka’, a type of playpen. She also relates proper nutrition for both mother and baby and how to prepare the baby’s first solid food. First steps and different means the child first uses for locomotion are also described. She also relates how to prepare an herbal bath to warm the baby. Catalina believes it is much easier to raise children nowadays in modern houses and with modern conveniences such as ready made clothes. Healthcare and nutrition are also better now and she surmises that is the reason that there are many more Tsachila now than in the old days when many children died. Specific instances in which the child was in danger or became ill and died are described. She includes an event in which she almost lost her oldest daughter due to diarrhea. At first they took the child to some Catholic nuns, who simply told her not to be sad because the child was about to become an angel. Returning home the child was cured by an Otavalo who treated her with a prepared liquid and cumin. She then described how her father would prepare an herbal cure from passion fruit to treat children suffering from diarrhea.

La seguridad física del niño es primordial y Catalina se describe cómo hacer un tipo de papoose de la vaina de la pambil y cómo construir una "sokoka ', una especie de corralito. También se relaciona la nutrición apropiada tanto para la madre como para el bebé y cómo preparar el alimento sólido del bebé. La edad y los diferentes métodos que el niño utiliza primero a gatear y caminar también se describen. También relata cómo preparar un baño de hierbas para calentar el bebé. Catalina cree que es mucho más fácil de criar a los hijos hoy en día en las casas modernas y con todas las comodidades modernas, tales como ropa confeccionada. Salud y nutrición también son mejores ahora y ella se conjetura que es la razón de que hay muchos Tsachila más ahora que en los viejos tiempos, cuando muchos niños murieron.
