In this explanation he tells the background story of this song and continues it past the end of the song to include the story of how the Maitai people never kill a tiger. This is because when they crossed the river, the tiger took them across and after that it was sleeping. They rubbed its legs to wake it up and say they were going, and hence they are called Maitai (mai ‘rub’). To this day Maitai people will not kill a tiger and if one is killed they hold a funeral service for it.
