The bamboo flowers only once in a generation, so when it flowers it is necessary to collect it. If it flowers, plenty of rats will come to eat it and that will cause famine. Thats why they are forced to go and collect and eat that flower. It is said that the person who sings this song does not need to collect the bamboo fruits; rather he will sit and sing and other people will give him some share of the fruits.
