| Description: | The MV Taimareho incident occurred on April 3, 2020, in the Solomon Islands, when 27 passengers were swept overboard amid rough seas and strong winds caused by Tropical Cyclone Harold. The ferry departed Honiara for Malaita late on April 2, ignoring cyclone warnings and port advisories to stay docked. Between 2-3am on April 3, massive waves hit the overloaded vessel (carrying ~700 people), washing passengers into the sea between Guadalcanal and Malaita Honourable John Mane receives 20K from artists to support families who lost their love ones during the tragic incident on MV Taimareho recently Member for West Are Are Constituency, Honourable John Maneniaru, have received a sum of AUD$3,969.29 equivalent to SBD$20,034.27 raised by Charlie Maimarosia family in support towards family members who have lost their love ones during the tragic MV Taimareho incident. Mr Charlie Maimarosia lived in Melbourne, Australia. Charlie is a local talented musician born and raised from Pipisu Village, West Are’are, Malaita Province. In fact, some of Charlie’s extended family members have lost their lives during MV Taimareho’s tragic incident. Mr Charlie Maimarosia a local talented musician says “I would like to thank wantok musik labels because Amy Chapman and David Bridie and Andy who recorded the forgiveness song. They are the ones who made the fundraiser happen. One of the most loved wantok artist Charles Maimarosia who wanted to give the forgiveness song to his people during their time of great sorrow as a tribute towards the fundraising for his people during this tragic time to ask for forgiveness.” “On Saturday the 4 of April 2020, a ferry disaster caused by Tropical Cyclone Harold led to 27 people who were on the top deck to be thrown overboard. The passengers were departing the capital Honiara on the MV Taimareho under a government program to evacuate people to their home villages in fear for safety due to the global COVID-19 epidemic. Most of the passengers were students who were returning home. Some of Charles' nephews, niece were amongst those who have drowned.” Mr Maimarosia says, “Whilst we appreciate that times are tough for everyone at present due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we would like to fundraise an appropriate amount of money to support victims’ families in this tragic time.” Charlie has recorded a song 'AMAMAMIURU (Forgiveness) that he wished to make available online in return for donations to this cause. Any donations made to this campaign will receive an mp3 of the song. Donations over AUD$25 will also receive a download code for Charlie’s' EP, 'Are'Are'. Mr Maimarosia says, “It would be greatly appreciated if those who have the means can offer a small gesture of support to our close neighbours in the Solomon Islands.” He says, “The wantok musik foundation is a not-for-profit Music Label that records, releases and promotes culturally infused music from Indigenous Australia, Melanesia and the broader Oceania region. Wantok Music raises the local and international profile of Indigenous and world music groups based in the region, and provides greater economic opportunity for artists and long-term career sustainability. Artists represented include George Telek from Papuan New Guinea (PNG), Charles Maimarosia (Solomon Islands), Kaumaakonga KMK (Solomon Islands), Tio (Vanuatu), Frank Yamma (Australia) and Emily Wurramara (Australia).” The local artist Mr Maimarosia says, “The minimal assistance to victims relatives after such a tragic loss is always a wake up call to come together and give all the assistance they can get. On that note, I would like to thank individual donors for their valued donations towards this cause.” Meanwhile, Honourable John Maneniaru stated that he would like to thanked Maimarosia family, The wantok musik foundation particularly Amy Chapman, David Bridie and Andy Robinson, and all individual donors in Australia and overseas who donated during this difficult time with COVID-19 because people have lost their jobs but with their big hearts they donated nonetheless. He further add that these supports will directly be offered to families and relatives that have lost their loved ones during the MV Taimareho Incident. “I lost for words to describe the sadness that all of us have experienced in this tragic time. I would like to inform relatives and friends that we are greatly saddened of the unfortunate passing away of our loved ones and wish God’s comforts to heal us during this time of bereavement,” Mr Maimarosia shared.
