| Description: | In the video, Abboye Alade and Asmelash Michael explain why a row of different cattle in the barn are ordered in the way they are. The ploughing oxen are kept in the barn near the exit of the house so as to have the strongest, more difficult to manage closest to the door. Next to the oxen stand the cows ordered in such a way that those that give milk are placed more deep in the interior. Finally comes the place of the calves, the last born further inside the house’s interior, closer to the hearth to keep them warm. When the cattle are taken outside for grazing, the stronger cattle are taken out first, one by one, in the order they stand in the barn, so that they would not harm the calves. When they are brought back home in the evening, they enter the barn in the reverse order (i.e. the youngest ones enter the barn first, then the milk-cows followed by other cows (if any) and then the oxen). The video recording was done in the house of Mr Ayyano and Mrs. Abbaynesh by Azeb Amha (with Panasonic HC-W580) while Asmelash Michael made an audio-recording of the session using Zoom4H. | |
