| Description: | T’eff cultivated by Mr Tariku Chifaw is being processed to separate grains from chaff. Tariku himself does not live close to his farm so the harvest was stored in the compound of Mr At’nafu Antasha and the work observed in the present and other nine sessions takes place at At’nafu’s place in Dimalle village, in Bonke District. Tariku has invited a few young men who do the work for payment. Others like Mr At’nafu Antasha and his father Antasha Kashko are invited through reciprocal labour exchange system called “dabo”. They are not payed but Tariku would provide drinks and meals and next time when their harvest is processed, he would help them with the work or send a family member or a paid laborer to help them. During the recording, family members of Mr At’nafu were present: children, women who were not engaged in the work directly. The conversation in the present session involves joking remarks about ‘being recorded’. Further the men simultaneously make non-speech rhythmic sounds like “shshhhh” that help them to carry on with the work. | |
