0185-Maclovio
Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture
Contributor:TCR
Coverage:Mexico
Date:2011-03-24
Description:TCR tells of Maclovio López and Félix Ríos, two men who in the old days were rope makers known for how the worked all of the time twisting rope from maguey fiber. They twisted the fibers on their bare skin instead of using a piece of leather tied to their thighs for protection. They would go on the backs of beasts every year to the festival of Huaxpaltepec and twist rope as they traveled. In Huaxpala they would trade rope for tobacco and burnt salt. This was their livelihood. TCR then goes on to comment on how this was good hard work like the people used to do. Now people are abandoning the traditional crafts and customs and don't travel much to festivals anymore. Audio duration [00:07:36]
