Description:This text is about alcohol. It can be a good thing as God has given it, but the devil is involved in it and that is why it often causes harm. The text has multiple levels. At the start TCR tells the listener about how he and his friends were planning to start making mezcal by the river in San Pedro del Río. He has dark dreams of a strange person asking him for two goats. He relates his dreams to his friends, who say it must be the devil and they should consult with the priest. The priest tells them that mezcal is good for health and enjoyment, but he must bless their hands at the river before they make the drink in order to keep the devil away. TCR relays the priest's sermon to them, which is the story about how God's brother, the devil, was upset because God is praised at the festivals and he, the devil, has no part. He wants in. God agrees to let him in, giving him a role in the drink of the festivals. The devil kills three of his children and spills their blood on the heart of maguey and all other fruits, which can all be made into alcohol. He first kills a monkey, then a bull, and finally a pig. According to the story this is why people begin to jump around happy when they first drink a little (the monkey). Then as they drink more, they get rough and violent (the bull). Finally, as they keep going, they end up rolling around and sleeping in the mud like a pig. At the end, TCR explains how the priest told them this story. He then goes on to say that mezcal is good if one is in their right mind and can keep oneself in control.Audio duration [00:12:15]
