| Description: | This tale was told to TCR by his father. The Chatinos of Zenzontepec used to travel to the salt lagoon on the coast in old times to fetch salt. A Chatino man stops along the way (maybe in Tututepec) and stays with a Mixtec friend there. A local drunk doesn't like the Chatino and decides to try to mess with him and kill him. He is a sorcerer. When the Chatino is about to eat, he squeezes his lime on his plate of beef, and the drunk makes the food burst full of worms. The Chatino and his friend know who did it. The drunk is thrown in jail. The Chatino leaves, gets his salt, and on the return journey he sets up camp for a night. A jaguar (the encarcerated drunk in the body of his animal spirit companion) attacks him. The Chatino smacks the feline in the head, and it dies. When he later talks to his friend he is informed that the man in jail screamed during the night and was dead and black in the morning. If a person's tono (animal spirit) dies, the person dies. The Chatino story ends at 3:45 and is retold in Spanish. There is commentary and reactions from JRR throughout the recording.
