Title:Small children and fright
0185-Small children and fright
Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture
Contributor:TCR
Coverage:Mexico
Date:2011-03-19
Description:TCR talks about children who are born small and weak. Traditional Chatino beliefs have it that this is due to the mother receiving some sort of fright during pregnancy and then eating or sleeping in that frightened, weakened state. The sickness, called susto or espanto, affects the baby in the womb. If the woman is healthy and strong, she is less likely to get frightened. If the woman does get frightened, she should avoid eating, drinking, or sleeping. TCR then advises that people should avoid the following frightening situations when a woman is pregnant: don't argue, stay away from violence, don't dwell on problems, and don't do anything to frighten women.
