Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture
Contributor:TCR
Coverage:Mexico
Date:2008-07-30
Description:TCR tells EC and FCO the history of mezcal making in his family. A man named Moises from Sola de Vega that lived in El Portillo went to San Pedro to get people to teach to make mezcal. TCR's uncle Leonardo was the head, and they worked a few months a year making the spirits, from Feb until May or June. They built an oven in the public garden (La Huerta) but lacked good tools and resources. They had maguey but lacked sufficient land to make enough to earn a living. They never exported, and they no longer are able to sustain the work. A Spanish retelling and discussion begins at 4:32.Audio duration [00:10:51]
