Title:Women after giving birth
0185-Women after giving birth
Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture
Contributor:TCR
Coverage:Mexico
Date:2009-06-13
Description:This story relates what happened to a woman named Dorotea, a woman named Luisa and a woman named Victoriana. They all died because after they gave birth they ate food considered "cold" in Chatino (Mesoamerican) ethnomedicinal tradition. TCR talks about how he cares for his wife after childbirth. They have 13 children now (in 2012). He says women are very susceptible to sickness for forty days (la cuarentena) after they give birth. If they eat "cold" food. like crayfish or watermelon, a coldness enters them that gets worse over time, especially as they have more children. The womb deteriorates. The story came up through discussion of ethnomedicinal practice and knowledge during the ethnomedicine workshop during the 2009 PDLMA summer field season. Audio duration [00:09:21]
