Title:The cactus and the child's fruit
0185-The cactus and the child's fruit
Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture
Contributor:TCR
Coverage:Mexico
Date:2007-07-06
Description:TCR describes a traditional belief of the Chatinos of Zenzontepec. When a boy is born his testicles are swollen, and according to the belief they will continue to swell. The father goes and looks for a specific cactus, called tunillo in the regional Spanish and ya tii7 (xike!e_ jo7o_) in Chatino. He cuts a piece and uses it to poke the baby boy's testicles. The prickles cause the swelling to subside. It is doubtful that this is actually practiced. The Chatino telling ends at 1:31, and a Spanish retelling begins at 1:37. Audio duration [00:03:01]
