Title:The snake and the eagle
0185-The snake and the eagle
Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture

Coverage:Mexico
Date:2009-07-23
Description:Long ago there was a horrible monster in a cave. The people got a sorcerer to kill it. He entered the cave with a knife and turned into his animal spirit companion, a giant snake. He warns the people that if the water turns red, “I have killed the beast”, but if it turns white and foamy, “the animal is eating me and you should pull me out by the rope”. This tale connects to the one by GCG about the águila real that used to steal children. That may be the beast that was in the tunnel. It also overlaps with TCR's tale of the Río Chapulín, where a Mixtec sorcerer goes in to a cave to kill a monster and the river turns red.
