Description:Recording of normal daily activity (morning) in the Missão Tiriyó nursery.
A project for the analysis and description of the Tiriyó language, based on fieldwork. It started in 1993 (under Dr. Spike Gildea's Northern Brazilian Cariban Languages Documentatino Project, NSF grant DBS-9210130) and continues to the present.
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = 'conversation', Discursive = 'explanation', Performance = 'Unspecified'. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
This session contains about 1 1/2 hours of normal daily (morning) activity in the nursery -- people come in to talk to the nurse and get medicine. 70% of the time, there's nothing; in the rest, there are short conversations (exchanges with the nurse, usually with translators; conversations between the patients and the translators/helpers; or conversations among the patients themselves).
Rosa, the nurse, speaks only Portuguese; she talks to Tiriyó patients with the help of translators (Susan, etc.). Some of the patients can understand her (they know enough Portuguese words for that), but they can usually answer only in Tiriyó.
Sérgio sets up the camera+microphone set in the nursery then goes away; the other participants are: Rosa, the nurse, the helpers (Susan), and the Tiriyó patients, who talk to Rosa and/or Susan.
Sérgio Meira is the main researcher in the Tiriyó descriptive project.
Susan is a 20-ish-year-old young woman. She is Marciano's wife. She speaks K-Tiriyó (apparently she is from the Tëpu area).
Sérgio Meira is also the researcher responsible for the project on the analysis and description of the Tiriyó language.
The original tape was given to Dick van den Born, who made me an identical copy. I digitized this copy, which is the source for the MPEG file.
