Description: | JK narrates Ah Hooch', a spell for fire ants. The purpose is to record sekretos 'spells'.
Lacandon Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandon(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandon culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
JK recites Ah Hooch', a spell for fire ants. This spell, or "sekreto" , as the Lacandones refer to these types of texts, was volunteered by JK after CNK asked her to recite any spells she knew. The setting is casual and there is a small audience comprising of CNK, KM, KP, and JK and KM's brother, KMJKBr. An explanation of this text is provided in Exp_AhHooch_JK.
Lacandon is the language used in this session. Spanish may be heard spoken by CNK and the Collector.
JK is the primary contributor of this text, although KM, KP and CNK can be heard off camera asking questions and providing back channeling.
KM is CK Viejo's third and eldest living wife. She is the head of the household, by virtue of her seniority. She has borne ten children, all of whom are now adults and have long since moved out of the family household. She is adored by KP's grandchild, Lej. She has never left the village, except for the occasional trips to other surrounding villages, and the larger towns of Ocosingo and San Cristobal.
CNK is one of CK's daughters and the daughter of CK's third wife, KP. She was born in Naha and has lived there all her life. She still ives at home, as do most Lacandón girls before they marry (typically, at 14 years of age). She lives in a traditional household with more than mother and, her unmarried siblings, and young niece and nephew.
KMJKBr was born and raised in Naha. He is the brother of KM and JK. He is single and lives with JK.
JK was born in Naha. She is KM's sister, and lives with her brother.
The collector of this session data is also responsbile for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
KP was born and raised in Naha. She was brought into CK Viejo's household when she was five years old. She was raised by her co-wife KM. She and CK Viejo had ten children, some of whom still live on the family property. She has not ventured far from Naha.
