Lacandón Cultural Heritage
Contributor (speaker):AM
Description:This session introduces U K'äy ti7 Na7asah Pom "Song for Raising Copal", but the song is not included in this session. The song can be found in Song_Pom_AM_04.
Lacandon Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandon(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandon culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = '', Discursive = '', Performance = ''. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
This session introduces U K'äy ti7 Na7asah Pom, but the sung is not included here. It is more of an inquiry on the part of the collector, rather than a description of the the song. The song can be foundin session Song_Pom_AM_04.
Lacandon is the main language spoken in this session. Spanish is used between the collector and SK.
AM and SK discuss the U K'äy ti7 Na7asah Pom. The collector is asking them questions about this song.
AM is an elder in the community of Naha. He is respected for his knowledge of traditional Lacandón culture, and his knowledge of the traditional stories and ceremonial formulae. He is one of the few Lacandones who still practice the ancient Maya rituals. He is related to CK and his family by marriage. AM provides the bulk of the traditional rituals and stories for this corpus.
SK is one of CK and KP's younger children. He was born in Naha and has lived there all his life. He still lives at home, with his new wife NI. He provides the bulk of the Lacandon-Spanish translations, and is present during many sessions recorded with AM.
The collector of this session data is also responsible for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
