Coverage:East Timor
Date:2002-11-23
Description:Introducing Waima'a project, human rights work, Waima'a
very spontaneous, but also somewhat hectic and confuse because the UN personal is still very nervous and busy because of the recent demonstration and its aftermath two days earlier (local police station was attacked by demonstrators) - the human rights section is very much at the forefront of events investigating possible police misconduct - about ten minutes into the conversation Mr Franz (UN head of mission) interrupted for some urgent enquiry - certainly in some ways a less than ideal time for making such a recording - language-wise a heavy mix with lots of Indonesian, English and Tetum loans thus documenting a form of Waima'a as it may survive in a modern international office setting - this conversation also illustrates the interaction of two Waima'a who do not know each other and are not in any way directly related
A few more people present, mostly friends of MB and driver of microlet turnout smaller than expected/intended - most importantly other teachers did not show up although they were invited according to MB
