Lacandón Cultural Heritage
Contributor (speaker):Om
Description:This is the second recording session with Om, the two year-old son of CHX and KA. In this session, the camera simply follows Om around. The purpose is to record naturally occurring speech, which, in this case, are one-syllable words.
Lacandón Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandón(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandón culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
This is the second recording session with Om, the two year-old son of CHX and KA. The purpose is to record child language acquisition. In this session, Om is practicing one syllable words. The collector does not interact with Om to any great extent. Other sessions with Om filmed during this period are Om_01, Om_03, Om_04, Om_05.
Lacandon is the primary language spoken in this session. Spanish is spoken sparingly by the collector.
Om is the main contributor in this session. The collector is present and can be heard asking Om questions and generally trying to get him to talk.
The collector of this session data is also responsbile for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
