She talks about the people who lived there, the festivities they used to celebrate, and the location of other Trumai villages, such as Krajajan and Urukutu. She also mentions the conflicts that happened in the past between the Trumai and other Xinguan tribes, such as the Suya. The recording was made by the son of the woman.
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
A Trumai woman talks about "Anaria", an old Trumai village.
The main speaker talks in Trumai. The other participants of the session talk sometimes in Portuguese.
The speech is performed by Speaker12. She was videotaped by Speaker17, who is her main listener.
Speaker12 is a native speaker of Trumai. Both her parents were Trumai. She and her brother are the last descendents of the Awaldat group, a Trumai subdivision that used to speak a different dialect of the language. However, this dialect seems to have disappeared (Speaker12's way of speaking is similar to the way of speaking of the other Trumai individuals). Her late husband was Kayabi. She lives with her son and daughter-in-law and has several grandchildren. She is middle-aged (50 or more).
Speaker17 speaks Trumai and Portuguese. Portuguese is his main language. He can understand Trumai very well, but sometimes has difficulties in speaking it. His mother is Trumai, his late father was Kayabi. Speaker17 is the teacher of the Boa Esperança village, and it is considered one of the best teachers of the Xingu reserve. He is very interested in the work of documenting the Trumai language and culture.
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
