The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
The researcher requests the interpreter (Speaker14) to ask his grandfather (Speaker1) about important facts that happened in old Trumai villages. Speaker1 talks about the requested topic.
The researcher talks in Portuguese. The main narrator talks in Trumai. The interpreters talk in both languages.
There were four main participants: the researcher (RG), the native speaker of Trumai (Speaker1), and the interpreters, Speaker14 and Speaker3.
Speaker1 was a native speaker of Trumai. He was considered the best storyteller of the Trumai people. He was also an expert in ritual chants, being very respected by other Xinguan groups. He had knowledge about medicinal plants and roots, and shamanism practices. He was old (above 70) when the died in 1995.
Speaker3 is a native speaker of Trumai. She lives in the Terra Preta village, in the central area of the Xingu Reserve. Both her parents were Trumai. Speaker3 lived in the Kamayurá village for many years, when she was still married. Nowadays she is separated, living with her daughter and son. She is middle-aged.
Speaker14 was a native speaker of Trumai. He also spoke Portuguese. He died in November, 2001, because of health problems.
